Geopolitics and National Security Series: The Shifting Sands of Global Power

Description

Great power politics are intensifying inter-state competition, reshaping global institutions, unbalancing regional dynamics, and altering the conduct of foreign affairs. At the heart of this reordering are China's growing power and assertiveness, and a diminishing United States resolve to absorb the costs of global leadership.

For smaller powers, this is calling into question the extent to which they can rely on the norms, webs of agreements, and multilateral structures that have underpinned their dealings with other countries for generations.

The first event in this series will explore the reordering of international power, how new political, security and trade arrangements are emerging throughout the world, and the scope and limitations of alliances and multilateral governance. The panellists will discuss the strategies and toolkits that smaller countries can employ to compete and advance their interests in this era of great power competition.

Speakers

• Ann Fitz-Gerald is the Director of the Balsillie School of International Affairs and Professor in Wilfrid Laurier University's Political Science Department, as well as a Senior Research Associate at the Royal United Services Institute (UK).
• Christian Leuprecht is the Class of 1965 Professor in Leadership, Department of Political Science and Economics, Royal Military College, and the Eisenhower Fellow at the NATO Defence College in Rome. He is cross-appointed to the Department of Political Studies and the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University.
• Deanna Horton is a Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, a Senior Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation. Previously a career foreign service officer, she was appointed as Ambassador of Canada to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 2008.

Jill Sinclair is a retired Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy), Department of National Defence. She currently serves as Canada's representative to the Ukraine Defence Reform Advisory Board.
