In 2021, September 30 was declared a federal statutory day of commemoration in Canada to mark the tragic history of residential schools and honour the Survivors.
Originally held in preparation for the second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, this event rebroadcast focuses on the lived experiences of residential school Survivors and their lasting impact on Indigenous communities. Guest speakers will share their thoughts and insights on the meaning of these experiences for them and for us all as we continue together on the journey towards truth and reconciliation.
This important event is also an occasion to take action in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action #57, which calls upon all levels of government to "provide education to public servants on the history of Aboriginal peoples, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal-Crown relations."
This event is presented in partnership between the Canada School of Public Service, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Indigenous Services Canada, and the Knowledge Circle for Indigenous Inclusion.
