As we accelerate the pace of devices, information, and activities moving online, we increase our vulnerability to bad actors operating in this space. There is an increasing number of cyber threat actors and they are becoming more sophisticated every day. Ransomware attacks continue to target large enterprises and critical infrastructure. In those cases, even minor disruptions can impact the lives of a great number of Canadians. Moreover, state-sponsored cyber activity poses a sustained threat to Canada and its allies. What can governments and individuals do in the face of this complex and rapidly evolving situation?
In February 2021, the Canada School of Public Service welcomed Melissa Hathaway, President of Hathaway Global Strategies LLC and former advisor on cyber security to both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, and Scott Jones, the first Head of the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. Revisit the discussion as they explore the implications of events like the 2014 Sony Pictures hack and Stuxnet, the consequences of paying versus not paying a cyber ransom, and what the most important steps people and organizations can take so that they do not become a victim of a cyber threat.
