Navigating the biggest public health crisis in decades has highlighted the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in our lives. Every day, we rely on experts in these fields to provide us with information, advice and reassurance, and prominent women in STEM roles have recently featured among them.
According to a 2019 Statistics Canada report, however, women continue to be significantly underrepresented in STEM fields. Fewer women are graduating from post-secondary STEM programs compared with men, and those who do are less likely to obtain or stay in jobs in their field. Statistics for women from underrepresented groups are even more discouraging. Yet we need women in these fields to help reduce skill gaps, increase economic productivity and innovation, and combat negative gender stereotypes.
Join us for a conversation with Dr. Mona Nemer, Canada's Chief Science Advisor, and Sarah Paquet, Director and Chief Executive Officer of FINTRAC, who will talk about their careers in STEM and share their perspectives on the importance of women role models and why increased diversity in STEM fields is essential for innovation and Canada's economic well-being.
