Experience

Monique is an Indigenous person of mixed ancestry, specifically a non-status Indian, born and raised on the territory of the Algonquin peoples. Throughout her life, she has had the privilege of learning from Elders, Knowledge Keepers and leaders.

Monique has worked in the federal public service since 2000 and became a faculty member in 2024. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in Indigenous relations and realities, along with a deep passion for sharing this knowledge.

Before joining the School, Monique held various roles of increasing responsibilities at Indigenous Services Canada. Her work included supporting National Indigenous Peoples Day activities, overseeing the on-reserve early childhood development program, and managing files related to Missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and to Indigenous veterans. She also led consultations and engagements with First Nations, Inuit and Métis on various issues and programs, and oversaw the implementation of modern treaties and self-government agreements.

Monique joined the School with the goal of putting reconciliation into action, or reconciliaction, by raising awareness and understanding—both for the learners and for herself. She remains committed to exploring and honouring Indigenous history and cultures across Canada and aims to become a trusted guide for learners on their journey towards reconciliation. Monique believes that by sharing knowledge, we can help create a better future for everyone and for the next seven generations.

Relationship-building, connectedness, humility, and respect are the cornerstones to Monique’s approach to guiding and supporting her colleagues on their learning journey. She strives to promote cultural awareness and competence by creating positive and meaningful learning spaces.
