Narrator: The Government of Canada is committed to creating an inclusive and accessibility-confident public service. The GC Workplace Accessibility Passport is an initiative

Narrator: that helps with recruitment, retention, and career advancement for employees with disabilities, and facilitates the workplace accommodation process.

Narrator: To understand what led to the launch of the Passport initiative, let's hear from Luna Bengio from the Office of Public Service Accessibility.

Luna Bengio: There are three areas where we need action in order to create the inclusive public service that we all want; that treats people for what they can bring and values

Luna Bengio: the talent of a diverse workforce. The first is accessibility of the environment. So an environment that's welcoming, that's barrier free. The second is a culture that values people for what they are, and really welcomes and values difference. And the third, that's where the workplace accessibility passport comes in, is really the access to individual adjustments. So, no matter how welcoming the culture, no matter how accessible the environment,

Luna Bengio: some individuals, many individuals, are going to need either tools or equipment or support measures to ensure that they can succeed in the workplace.

Luna Bengio: Many public servants with disabilities have repeatedly said, through employee surveys or through a benchmarking study of workplace accommodation that the Office of Public Service accessibility conducted in 2019, that they experienced difficulty in obtaining these accommodations.
Managers have also told us through that benchmarking study that they don't know what to do in many circumstances when an employee comes to them and says, I need workplace accommodations. So, there's a need for awareness, a need for training, a need for resources as well to support managers in creating that inclusive workplace.

Luna Bengio: So that is what led the Office of Public Service accessibility to think about a passport.
Narrator: The GC Workplace Accessibility Passport empowers candidates and employees with disabilities to succeed, regardless of the barriers they face. With the Passport, we can create a respectful and inclusive workplace that is free of discrimination.
